Quarter One

The activity was to make an essay about you. You would write about your hobbies, what you like, you family, and anything else you experienced and enjoyed. I first made a handwritten draft which I got edited and the product was a typed, second draft. This time Mrs.Dodd told us about the MLA format. Mrs.Dodd said that if we began using the MLA format now, we would be ready for highschool where we would have to use this format. I called my essay The Life of Iris Rahman because I wrote in third person perspective where I acted like I was writing a story on someone else instead of writing it from my view.

The purpose of this activity was for Mrs.Dodd to get to know all of us better because it was the beginning of the year. It was also to help us practice our writing skills and get use to the MLA format. Since this was the first piece of writing we did this year, I think it was to get us warmed up for the year. It also made me realise I should begin to check my writing myself instead of just giving it to someone else to check.

I learned about the MLA format and how to use it properly. I now know that I should check my work myself. Third person writing is something new to me for this was my first time trying it. I also learned about run-ons and how some sentences can be run-ons even if they don’t seem like it.

I would have changed one major thing that was checking it over. I only checked the first paragraph. If I had checked the whole thing, I would have only had a couple mistakes only. Another thing I should have done is added more of my voice to it by writing it like I say and think of that idea. I would have also read it aloud or have someone who is good at activities like this to check it.

This doesn’t relate to my goal which is getting better at my reading comprehension skills: multiple choice skills. It is not like my social goal either because my goal is to say one thing in every class everyday. Here I am writing an essay; not answering questions about something I am reading. But I guess this activity is like answering questions about the book that I have “read” about my life.
