We have done a lot this year in 6th grade Language Arts and Social Studies. Since there is so much to talk about, I will start form the beginning.
At the beginning of the year, we did projects on ourselves and book reports. We did projects on our home country like maps, flags, and essays. We made poems and essays on ourselves too. The book reports that we did were mainly about specific genres that we were studying at that time. Like autobiographies and biographies.
A couple times a month, we would play a game called dazzle where we would spell and say the meanings or our vocabulary words for that week. Mrs.Chamberlain had invented a system where we would get points for our groups and at the end of the week, the group with the most points would win a prize.
Sometimes, we would get soccer breaks for ten to fifteen minutes. When we were done playing, we would all go as fast as we could back to the class because the fastest group back would get fifty points.
We also did stuff in SS where we would learn vocabulary words from our SS textbook. The words were about the topic that the article was about. Some were easy ike “characters” but some were hard like “oligarchy”. Our first field trip was to a printing press but we also went to the Corniche to sketch and the museum.
After we learned and read a little, we began to sketch other things from our textbook like the ancient Nubian/Egyptian sketch or the Greek sketch. We also did essays on ancient Persia and China. We did a probe page and timeline as well as a poster on China and an Arctic animal.
After a while we had a bazaar. In the bazaar, we would dress as ancient characters and sell items like food or old toys. At our first bazaar, we were alowwed to sell anything but for the other two, we were only allowed to sell things we made.
Near the end of the year, we made a magazine by ourselves to sell at the last bazaar. People who had extra copies were asked to sell the magazines at moms and muffins because the theme of it was language arts.
Currently, we are doing a project that we made up by ourselves. We had to choose an ancient civilization to research about and present. Most people chose Egypt and Rome because they were the easiest.
These are just the highlights of the year. There is a lot more but there just isn’t enough time to explain all of them.
